WORD GAME TIPS & STRATEGY

Use these expert tips to score higher in Scrabble, Words with Friends, and Wordle.

High-Value Short Words

Short words with rare letters score surprisingly well. Keep these 2–3 letter gems in mind:

ZA (11) QI (11) XI (9) XU (9) ZO (11) OX (9) AX (9) EX (9) JO (9) KA (6)

Rack Management

A balanced rack wins more games than a lucky one. Follow these principles:

  • Aim for 2–3 vowels and 4–5 consonants at all times
  • Avoid holding duplicate letters unless you can play both
  • Keep high-value tiles (Q, Z, X, J) but don't hoard them
  • Trade tiles if your rack has 4+ vowels or 6+ consonants

The 50-Point Bingo Bonus

Using all 7 tiles in one Scrabble turn earns a 50-point bonus. Practice these common 7-letter rack patterns to spot bingos faster:

  • -ATION, -ATIONS (great rack holders)
  • -ING + common consonants (READING, WRITING)
  • -ER/-EST endings signal many valid words
  • Prefixes RE-, UN-, IN- extend easily to 7 letters

Wordle Strategy

Wordle gives you 6 guesses to find a 5-letter word. Maximise information with each guess:

  • Open with a word using common letters: try CRANE, STARE, or TRACE
  • Green tile = correct position; use "Starts with" or "Ends with" filters
  • Yellow tile = letter present but wrong position; use "Must contain"
  • Gray tile = letter not in the word; mentally exclude it from candidates

WORD GAME DICTIONARIES

Understanding the official word lists used in competitive play.

TWL (Tournament Word List)

The Tournament Word List (TWL), also known as NASSC (North American Scrabble Players Association Word Committee), is the official word reference for Scrabble tournaments in the United States and Canada. It is maintained by NASPA and updated periodically to include new words and remove obsolete ones.

If you're playing Scrabble in North America, this is the dictionary you should use to resolve challenges and find valid words.

SOWPODS (International)

SOWPODS is an anagram of the titles of the two original dictionaries it combined: Official Scrabble Words (OSW) and Official Players Publication ( Chambers). It is the standard word list for Scrabble played in most countries outside of North America, including the UK, Australia, and many others.

SOWPODS is significantly larger than TWL because it includes thousands of words from British English that are not common in American English.

ENABLE (Words with Friends)

The Enhanced North American Benchmark Labeled Utterance (ENABLE) list is a widely used public domain word list that serves as the foundation for many digital word games, most notably Words with Friends. While it shares many words with TWL, it often includes more informal terms and has different rules for allowed prefixes and suffixes.

Everything you need to know about the Word Unscrambler.

Word Scrumble is a free online Word Unscrambler that finds every valid English word hidden within a set of scrambled letters. It's ideal for word games like Scrabble, Words with Friends, Wordle, Wordscapes, and more. All processing happens in your browser — nothing you type is ever sent to a server.

You can enter up to 15 letters at once, including up to 2 wildcard/blank tiles (represented by ? or *). This covers the maximum possible rack in any mainstream word game.

TWL (Tournament Word List) is used in North American Scrabble tournaments. SOWPODS is a combined dictionary used in international Scrabble tournaments, the UK, and Australia. SOWPODS contains all TWL words plus thousands of additional words from British English dictionaries. If you're playing online, check your game's settings to confirm which list it uses.

Type ? or * to represent a blank tile that can stand for any letter. You can use up to two wildcards per search. For example, entering APLE? will return words like MAPLE, AMPLE, LAPSE, PLEAS, and many others — every word that can be formed if the blank tile stands for any single letter.

Open Advanced Options and set the Word Length dropdown to 5 letters. Combined with the "Starts with", "Ends with", and "Must contain" filters, you can precisely narrow down Wordle candidates. For example, if you know the word starts with C and contains an A, set "Starts with" to C, "Must contain" to A, and word length to 5.

Each letter has a base point value in Scrabble: A, E, I, L, N, O, R, S, T, U = 1 point; D, G = 2; B, C, M, P = 3; F, H, V, W, Y = 4; K = 5; J, X = 8; Q, Z = 10. The points shown in our results are the sum of the base values only — they don't include premium squares (Double/Triple Letter/Word). Use them as a guide to prioritise plays.

No — and knowing Q-without-U words is essential for Scrabble. Valid Q-without-U words include: QI (vital energy in Chinese philosophy), QOPH (Hebrew letter), QANAT (an ancient irrigation tunnel), QIGONG, and QINTAR (Albanian currency unit). QI alone is worth 11 base points for just two letters, making it a prized play.
